providing a safe, enjoyable and friendly environment to allow all members to fulfill their potential as competitive swimmers

Water Polo

Hitchin Swimming Club is swim21 accredited for teaching water polo. The Club provides water polo for both juniors and seniors. It should be noted that all the Club’s policies, including child welfare, apply to the water polo section of the Club. Given the relatively small number of water polo players, the Club recognises that water polo sessions may comprise mixed gender and mixed age groups. Teaching follows ASA best practice to protect all those involved and ensure everyone enjoys their water polo.

New members are welcome to come and try-out on any Sunday evening at Hitchin Swimming Centre at 20:30. New members can try-out for three weeks before deciding whether to join. For further information see below, or e-mail wp@hitchinswimmingclub.co.uk.

Junior Water Polo Section

The junior water polo section is for players aged between 11 and 18, and is open to both girls and boys. Anyone joining must have basic swimming skills, and will usually have reached level 7 on the ASA National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS).

The teaching of water polo for juniors follows a termly plan, during which players will develop basic water polo skills. Players will develop skills and techniques to enable them to achieve levels 8 - 10 of the NPTS. Players will receive awards and certificates as they progress.

Older players will be invited to join the senior sessions when they are old and strong enough to cope. Particularly talented players will be sign posted to Watford Water Polo Club, where they will be able to train with other talented players.

Junior water polo takes place at Hitchin Swimming Centre from 20:30 - 21:00. Players must join the ASA and Club (as ASA Cat 1 non-competitive swimmers) and pay, by standing order, a monthly fee of £5.

Senior Water Polo Section

The senior water polo section is open to anyone over the age of 18, and is open to both women and men. The senior water polo section is aimed at recreational players who wish to compete at an occasional friendly match.

In order to join the seniors, the following minimum competency is required:

1. Swim 4 lengths continuously front-crawl

2. Swim 2 lengths continuously of back-stroke

3. Swim 2 lengths continuously of breast-stroke

4. Tread water for 1 minute with head out of water.

The senior water polo coaching is based around skill development and putting these ideas into practice during training games within the Club. Emphasis is on having fun whilst improving both technique and stamina.

Senior water polo takes place at Hitchin Swimming Centre from 20:30 - 21:45. Players must join the ASA and Club (as ASA Cat 2 competitive swimmers) and pay, by standing order, a monthly fee of £10.
